An AI social media manager is software that does the daily work of a social media manager: planning posts, writing them, designing them, scheduling and publishing them. In 2026 it can do most of that work well. It still needs a person for the voice, the judgment calls and the final yes.
Here is what to expect from one, and how to tell a good one from a caption generator with a new name.
What an AI social media manager handles well
- Reading your business. Learning your services, offers, colours and logo from your website instead of a long brief.
- Planning the month. A balanced mix of posts per platform, with dates and offers in the right weeks.
- Writing at volume. Dozens of captions, threads and LinkedIn posts in a consistent voice, each sized for its platform.
- Design. Photo posts with real looking people and your headline on the image, carousels, captioned reels.
- Timing. Posting when your audience is online, every day, without anyone remembering.
- Learning. Looking at what performed last month and doing more of it.
What still needs a person
- The voice, set once. The words you use, the claims you never make, the tone with customers. AI follows a voice well. It should not invent one.
- Facts about your business. Prices, hours, results and medical or legal claims must be checked by someone who knows.
- Sensitive moments. A complaint, a local tragedy, a news story: a person decides whether to post or pause.
- Real conversations. Replies to customers can be drafted by AI; the sending should be yours.
- The final approval. Nothing should post that nobody has read.
How to judge one
Ask it to make posts for your business before you pay. If they sound generic, more months will sound generic too.
Check that it publishes from your own accounts through official APIs.
Check that you can read, edit and skip every post before it goes out.
Ask what it does with likes, follows and messages. The right answer is nothing on its own.
AI manager, human manager, or both
A human social media manager brings judgment and relationships and costs a salary or a retainer. An AI manager brings volume and consistency at a fraction of the price and needs a person to steer it. For most small businesses the practical answer is AI doing the work and the owner, or a person at the service, doing the steering in one sitting a month.
